We just had an exciting four days of playoff sports — ones that were made even more memorable by wins from New York’s most popular NBA and NHL clubs.
For the first time in over a decade, both the New York Knicks and Rangers have reached the second round of their respective leagues’ playoffs. And for the first time since 1994, both teams are seeded within the top-two in each playoff bracket.
That led to a memorable stretch from Sunday to Wednesday this week. The Rangers and Knicks alternated dates at Madison Square Garden, going a combined 4-0 along the way. Included in that was a thrilling double-overtime win by the Rangers to take a 2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against Carolina.
Knicks and Rangers Odds: Can NY Win the NBA Finals?
While Knicks fans are certainly elated after taking a 2-0 lead and attempting to reach the conference finals for the first time since 2000, the reality is that they may not advance much further if that do reach that spot.
Brunson’s health is in question. Things look worse for OG Anunoby, who grabbed at his hamstring and left in the third quarter of Game 2. He was diagnosed with a sore hamstring, but we’ll see if that turns out to be more serious. Meantime, the already shorthanded Knicks have had to play Josh Hart for all 48 minutes in both games this series.
New York is overachieving, considering their odds to win the East were +700 at midseason and are now +320 at DraftKings.
Count hall of famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley among their critics.
The Knicks’ current NBA Finals odds at +1100. Considering New York has won six playoff games and would need to win 10 more to win it all, it seems unlikely that they will be able to continue going at the pace they are against more quality teams.
The Rangers Have a Better Chance
We will see if the Rangers have learned from history.
In each of the past two postseasons, the Blueshirts have been eliminated after taking a 2-0 lead in a series. Two years ago, it was in the conference final to Tampa Bay. Last year, the rival New Jersey Devils put them away in seven games.
New York, getting better goaltending from Igor Shesterkin and a power play that’s humming behind veterans Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck, appear to have all the ingredients to make a run at the Stanley Cup.
Unlike the Knicks, the Rangers are among the favorites to hoist the Cup in June. At DraftKings, New York and Colorado are each at +425, with Florida not far back at +450. Even though Edmonton blew a three-goal lead in Game 1 of their second-round series against Vancouver, the Oilers are next at +550.
While any one of those teams (or the other four remaining, quite frankly) can win the Stanley Cup, the odds prove that the Rangers have as good of chance as any. Solid goaltending and a productive power play are always key ingredients to a Stanley Cup-winning team, and NY has both.
The Ultimate New York Parlay?
As we mentioned, the Knicks were one win away from a daily double of New York championships in 1994. If you think, 30 years later, that it’s going to happen this time around, here’s a look at a parlay at BetMGM.
Two-team parlay: Knicks to win NBA championship (+1100) and Rangers to win NHL championship (+425): pays +6200 odds. Even a $10 bet on that would pay a cool $620. As the New York Lottery’s catchphrase once said: Hey, it could happen.
