We’re now a little over a month into the 2023 MLB season. Some teams have surprised to start the year while others have disappointed. The Mets and Yankees have each faced recent cold stretches and will be looking to get back on track. We’ll take a look at how each team’s World Series odds have been affected.
Yankees Trying to Break Out of Skid
The Yankees have dropped four in a row and seven of their last nine. During the four game skid, the Yankees bats have been held under two runs in each game.
To make matters worse, the team is completely banged up. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge are each on the IL and that’s not what a struggling offense needs. Stanton is expected to return four weeks from now but Judge should be back much sooner.
Anthony Rizzo and DJ Lemahieu have produced but the bottom of the lineup is lacking any firepower. Oswaldo Cabrera and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa are two lineup regulars that have been particularly disappointing. The Yankees will need a couple guys to step up while they wait for the big bats to return.
The good news is that the Yankees will have Gerrit Cole on the mound tonight. Cole is 5-0 on the year with a 1.11 ERA. We’re only a month into the season but the Yankees right hander is favored to win his first ever Cy Young award.
Mets Slip But Should Be Fine
The Mets started the season 14-7 but then lost six of their next seven. They won the second game of their doubleheader yesterday so they are now 16-13. The Mets will look forward to their upcoming series where they will debut their top free agent signing.
Justin Verlander will start on the mound Thursday against his former team, the Detroit Tigers. Verlander, 40, is aging but is coming off a year where he won his fifth Cy Young award. He should be a big boost to a rotation that was struggling with injuries.
Additionally, the Mets should be getting Carlos Carrasco back next week. If all goes as planned, Carrasco will be the number three guy in the Mets rotation.
Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso have been the Mets top bats to start the year. Alonso was red hot but has cooled off during the Mets recent tough stretch. Alonso is tied for the league lead with eleven home runs this year. If he can leave the yard 45 plus times this season he will be under consideration for the NL MVP award.

The Atlanta Braves have climbed to the top spot in the 2023 World series odds table. Ronald Acuna Jr. is off to a hot start with the Braves and is the NL MVP favorite.
The Tampa Bay Rays have risen all the way to fourth in the odds table. The Rays are an MLB best 23-6 and lead the AL East by 3.5 games. They’ll take on the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three game set that starts today.
The Pirates have surprised everyone and have the second best record in baseball. They’re first place in the NL Central with a 20-9 record. Despite the hot start, they’re still not getting much respect among NY sportsbooks. They’re tied for the 20th best World Series odds on BetRivers, at +10000.

The Mets and the Yankees World Series odds are still in the top eight, however they have dipped since Opening Day.
The Mets are in a tough NL East and the Braves appear to be the best team in that division through the first month. If Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander can return to ace form the Mets should be able to compete for first place in the NL East.
The Yankees on the other hand have less to be excited about. The team is struggling at the moment and will have to get things together. The goal should be to stay afloat as they await the return’s of Judge and Stanton, among other players.
