MLB 2023 Preview: NY Mets and Yankees Win Total Odds

SBNY » MLB 2023 Preview: NY Mets and Yankees Win Total Odds

We’re getting to the end of a long spring training that saw its share of ups and down for both the New York Mets and Yankees. Now, we’re turning to a popular preseason wager for the NY baseball teams: MLB win total odds.

Win total bets are popular because they often provide good value. You’re making a wager before the season starts, and in the case of Major League Baseball, you can get six months’ worth of enjoyment out of that one bet.

How Did the Mets and Yankees Fare in 2022 MLB Win Total Odds?

If you bet the over on Mets or Yankees win total odds in 2022, you were a happy bettor. Here were the odds from Caesars Sportsbook along with the final result.

TEAM2022 OVER-UNDER WIN TOTAL2022 RESULT
New York Yankees92.5 Wins99-63 (Over)
New York Mets90.5 Wins101-61 (Over)

The Yankees got off to such a hot start, they were on pace to eclipse Seattle’s all-time wins record of 116 wins when NYY sat at 52-18 on June 24. But even playing close to .500 ball the rest of the way at 47-45, they were able to comfortably top their 92.5 set win total.

The Mets were much more consistent all year. The Mets lost three crucial games to Atlanta in the final week of the season that cost them the National League East title, but they were still 18-13 in September. Atlanta was just that much better than the Mets from June 1 on. That doesn’t take away New York’s season-long performance of 101 wins, which was the second-most in franchise history and topped their set win total by more than 10 games.

New York Yankees 2023 MLB Win Total Odds

At FanDuel, the Yankees’ 2023 MLB win total odds are set at 93.5 wins.

If you’re a Yankee fan, you know that no metric matters besides winning a World Series. That’s something the Bronx Bombers have been unable to do since 2009, which is approaching the second-longest title drought in franchise history (1962-77). The longest is 18 years (1978-96). New York has been unable to solve Houston in the playoffs in recent years. Their 2022 ALCS sweep made it three losses to Houston in that round since 2017 along with dropping the 2015 AL Wild Card game to the Astros.

Of course, the Yankees’ biggest offseason move was re-signing Aaron Judge after he set an American League record with 62 home runs in an MVP season a year ago.

The big offseason signing was bolstering the pitching rotation by adding Carlos Rodon on a six-year deal. Rodon tweaked his shoulder in spring training. While he will likely miss out on Opening Day, Rodon figures to be healthy sometime before the end of April.

Gerrit Cole has thrown the second-most innings in MLB since 2019, but the health of Luis Severino and Nestor Cortes Jr. have been question marks. It also appears that 2022 trade deadline acquisition Frankie Montas may not pitch for much of the season with an arm injury that he said limited his effectiveness after coming to the Bronx.

Even with the health concerns, the Yankees will be a strong team that will benefit from the balanced schedule that will mean fewer games against the AL East, which sent three teams to the playoffs last year. Prediction: Over 93.5 Wins

New York Mets 2023 MLB Win Total Odds

The Mets also enter the 2023 MLB season with win total odds set at 93.5.

The number ticked down by a full game at most NY sportsbooks after closer Edwin Diaz was injured during a celebration at the World Baseball Classic and is likely out for the season after patellar tendon surgery.

The team did get good news, however, after it was feared that leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo also suffered a serious injury in an awkward slide into second base during a spring training game last Friday. But after being diagnosed with sprains, there’s a chance he could play in game No. 1 next Thursday in Miami.

The Mets have a new-look rotation after the departure of Jacob DeGrom. He was replaced by reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, who is teaming up with Max Scherzer once again after they led Detroit to a World Series in 2012.

Replacing Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker are Kodai Senga–a wild card from Japan–and Jose Quintana. The latter, however, is out until around the All-Star break with a rib fracture. The Mets will run with Carlos Carrasco as the fourth starter and a combination of David Peterson and Tylor Megill in the five spot.

Offensively, the Mets were second in hitting and fifth in runs scored in 2022, and the key parts of the lineup are back this year.

Just like the Yankees, the Mets should benefit from six fewer games against both Atlanta and Philadelphia, even though NYM had the Phillies’ number last season. Closer will be a question mark, but expect the front office to make a move to solidify the position if David Robertson and Adam Ottavino struggle. Regardless, we don’t see a 7.5 loss regression from 2022. Prediction: Over 93.5 Wins
