New York’s two baseball teams disappointed in last year’s playoffs, but have spent a ton in free agency to keep themselves near the top of 2023 MLB World Series odds boards.

Last season ended in disappointing fashion for New York’s baseball teams, despite the feel-good nature of the regular seasons for both clubs. The Yankees and Mets fell short in the championship pursuits, but entered the offseason looking to shore up their rosters. These teams spent widely in free agency, re-signing and adding talent, which has kept them near the top of 2023 MLB World Series odds boards.

Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings ended last week and teams, including the Yankees and Mets, combined to spend over $2 billion in free agency. And that staggering figure stands to rise in coming days as several marquee free agents remain on the market.

Here’s a look at the best odds for both the Yankees and Mets on 2023 MLB World Series odds boards.

New York sportsbooks opened their 2023 MLB World Series odds boards shortly after the 2022 champions were crowned. The Yankees started near the top of most boards, considering their run to the ALCS last season and deep pockets. General consensus had the Yankees at +1000 across the board, and at this point those odds have shortened slightly to +900. The Yankees remain among the favorites.

The Mets, meanwhile, opened a little further down the boards. Starting at +1200, the Mets lost their ace, Jacob deGrom, in free agency, but stabilized their rotation with the addition of Justin Verlander. The Mets continue to be active, signing and re-signing players, and they’ve seen their 2023 MLB World Series odds shorten as a result.

Yankees, Mets Remain Among the Favorites

Despite all the drama and spending so far this off season, the Yankees haven’t seen much movement in their World Series odds. Over at BetMGM, the Bronx Bombers opened at +900, trailing the LA Dodgers (+500), Houston (+700), and Atlanta (+800) on the odds board. However, after the many moves this offseason, the Yankees saw their positioning improve and now trail just the Astros and Dodgers.

Their odds could shorten should the team land Carlos Rodon. Recent reports have linked the Yankees to the left-handed pitcher, who posted a 2.88 ERA and 237 strikeouts for the San Francisco Giants last season.

After agreeing to a record-setting contract with Aaron Judge, the Yankees became the first team in league history to employ three $300-million players. That said, the team still has needs that can be addressed in free agency. The addition of Rodon would go a long way to stabilizing the rotation, and the Yankees could use another outfielder as well as bullpen arms.

The Mets, meanwhile, made waves early in free agency and continue to do so. After the Mets saw deGrom walk in free agency, the team quickly pivoted to Justin Verlander to fill that void. That move helped stabilize their 2023 MLB World Series odds before further signings shortened them.

Over at DraftKings, the Mets started the offseason with +1100 odds to win the World Series. New York re-signed key players like Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo. Then, they inked a deal with Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga, as well as Jose Quintana and David Robertson. Those moves positioned the Mets near the top of most 2023 MLB World Series odds boards and should keep them there throughout the season.
