New York sports has a lot of optimism for the new year. The state’s pro sports teams have a ton of star talent and potential, so fans are hoping to see a championship arrive soon. The last time one did come back to New York was in February of 2011 when Eli Manning’s Giants knocked off Tom Brady’s Patriots in the big game for the second time in four seasons. Yes, New York City F.C. won the 2021 MLS Cup, but the MLS is not considered a major sport.

Brooklyn Nets
The NBA Finals won’t be until June but the Brooklyn Nets already look like major threats to win an NBA title this season. After starting the season 9-11, the Nets went on to win 16 of their next 17 including 12 in a row. This excellent stretch of basketball has seen their odds shrink to +700.
At one point it did not look like the Nets would be able to put things together but that has changed. Kevin Durant is averaging nearly 30 points a game on 56.8 percent shooting. His shooting percentage this year is the highest it’s been in his elusive career and is remarkable given his outside shooting prevalence.
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl. Quarterback Josh Allen leads the team’s high-octane offense and will be looking to go all the way this year.
Last season they were the subject of some controversy in the playoffs. They lost in overtime of the divisional round to the Chiefs after losing the coin toss and not being given a chance with the ball in overtime.
If Your Bet Wins
The Chiefs are the only team with better Super Bowl odds than the Bills this year. The Bill’s odds stand at +420 to win the Super Bowl but there are a lot of unknowns surrounding the team. Their Week 17 contest against the Bengals was postponed after Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered Cardiac Arrest on the field. We are all hoping to see Hamlin make a complete recovery.
It’s unknown how or if the game will be made up along with how the team is able to respond emotionally following such a difficult event.

New York Yankees
The Yankees had a disappointing end to their 2022 season. They were swept by the eventual champions, the Houston Astros, in the ALCS. Over the off-season, they were able to re-sign Aaron Judge, allowing them to go into 2023 as one of the favorites to win it all.
The Yankees have +650 odds to win the 2023 World Series. This puts them in a tie with the Astros and the Mets as World Series favorites. The Bronx Bombers have not won the World Series since 2009 and the fanbase is starting to become impatient in the search for title number 28.
New York Mets
The Mets suffered a devastating wild card defeat in last year’s playoffs, but that didn’t stop team owner Steve Cohen from going for it again. Over the off-season, the team lost Jacob deGrom to free agency but managed to bring back Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz along with signing free agents Justin Verlander, Carlos Correa (pending physical), and Japanese phenom pitcher Kodai Senga.
The Mets could surely put together another 100+ win season, but this time they’ll be looking for more playoff success. Right now they have +650 odds to win the 2023 World Series which puts them in a tie for the best odds.
New York Rangers
The Rangers reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season behind a young, hungry squad. As we approach the halfway point of the NHL season, the Rangers hold the third spot in the Metropolitan division.
The Rangers exceeded expectations in last year’s postseason. They’re a team that should make the playoffs but oddsmakers aren’t super high on the Rangers to win it all. Right now, they have +2000 odds to win the Stanley Cup, which puts them in a tie for eleventh. These aren’t the best odds but they’ve got a better chance at lifting hardware this year than the other two New York hockey teams.

There are 4 New York teams with a significant shot to win a championship this year and end the 12-year major title drought in the Empire state. There’s no doubt that New York is in a good position to win one this year, but championships don’t come easy.
While there is no guarantee that New York’s title drought will end this season, every sports fan in the state has something to look forward to in 2023. Plenty of teams are in contention and based on the star power, it will remain that way for the coming years.
