The New York Jets were on their bye week in Week 10 of the 2022 NFL season, but despite not playing, their playoff odds improved greatly.
Thanks to a wild game that saw the Minnesota Vikings overcome a 17-point deficit to stun the Buffalo Bills in overtime, the Jets have moved ahead of the AFC East and Super Bowl favorite in the standings.
In a game full of amazing highlights (or lowlights from a Buffalo perspective), Justin Jefferson’s catch on 4th and 18 that would’ve otherwise ended the game stands out.
Back to the division: the AFC East is the only division in the NFL where all teams are above .500.
|AFC EAST TEAM||OVERALL RECORD||DIVISION RECORD|
|New York Jets||6-3||2-1|
|New England Patriots||5-4||1-1|
Miami’s blowout win over Cleveland on Sunday put them into sole possession of first place in the AFC East at 7-3. The Jets and Bills, who have already had their bye weeks, are a half-game back at 6-3. New England is 5-4 after also being idle in Week 10.
Do the Jets Have an Advantage?
The Jets are tied with Miami and Buffalo with three losses each, but they have a big edge over those two teams. New York defeated both Miami and Buffalo earlier in the season, giving them the edge currently in tiebreaker scenarios.
Both of those wins were also at home. So while the Jets will have to play at Miami and Buffalo later in the season, that might not be bad news for Gang Green: the Jets are 4-0 on the road this season.
The Jets have a key game at New England this week, as the Patriots handed New York their only loss within the division two weeks ago.
How Have the Jets’ AFC East and Playoff Odds Improved?
Despite the loss and falling into third place, the Bills remain favorites for both the AFC East and the Super Bowl. But those odds for the AFC East are more in play now than they have been all season. Here’s a look at where things stand at BetMGM.
|TEAM||CURRENT ODDS TO WIN AFC EAST||ODDS AFTER WEEK 9||PRESEASON ODDS|
|New York Jets||+1200||+1400||+4000|
|New England Patriots||+1400||+1600||+3300|
Oddsmakers are looking at the fact that the Bills have lost three close games, all to teams with the same or better records than they have. Buffalo has also already defeated the other three division leaders in the AFC: at Kansas City, at Baltimore, and home against Tennessee. Simply put, the oddsmakers believe the Bills will right the ship.
If you fall into that camp, then the Bills have great value at the moment.
From a Jets’ perspective, this weekend’s game at New England will tell a lot. We would recommend holding off on an AFC East bet until that game because with a loss in Foxborough, the Jets could easily be in last place come this time next week.
But a win next week would really improve the Jets’ playoff odds, and they would still be in okay shape even with a loss to the Patriots. In that case, we would recommend jumping on New York at even money to make the playoffs.
