We’re coming up on the halfway point of the 2022-2023 NHL season. The standings are starting to take shape as teams are in the midst of the season’s 82-game grind. The defending champs, the Colorado Avalanche, are not atop the Western Conference standings yet still hold the best odds to repeat as Cup champions. The Boston Bruins recently became the first team to reach 50 points and are just behind the Colorado Avalanche for the best odds to win the Stanley Cup.
The New York Rangers 7 game winning streak was just snapped by the Penguins. They’ve seen their odds improve along the way as the team has gotten itself back into playoff position.
NY Sportsbooks Are Split On a Favorite
At this point in the NHL season, there is no clear favorite in terms of who will win the Stanley Cup. The Colorado Avalanche were the favorites coming into the year. They’ve struggled at times through their first 31 games, and have been outscored 9-1 in their two meetings with the Bruins this season. The Avs currently hold the fourth spot in the Central division and if the season ended today they’d be going on the road to start their postseason run.
The Bruins have been the unequivocal best team in the NHL this season. At 25-4-2, they have the highest point total in the league, clear of the second-best team by 5 points. David Pastrnak is the team leader in points but it’s been a combined effort from this Bruins team that’s gotten them to this point.
Will a Canadian Team End the Drought This Year?
The Toronto Maple Leafs are the team best fitted to end the 29+ year drought of no Canadian team winning the Stanley Cup. The Maple Leafs have 46 points through the team’s first 33 games, which is good for second in the Atlantic Division behind the Bruins. Auston Mathews and Mitchell Marner are leading the way for a Toronto team that has risen to 5th in the Stanley Cup betting odds.
The Calgary Flames were a hot pick coming into the year due to their off-season acquisitions. They’ve struggled to find their groove and currently sit at 5th in the Pacific. They’ll want more from Jonathan Huberdeau down the stretch as they look to make noise in the Pacific Division.
The Edmonton Oilers made it to the Western Conference Finals last year. They’ll be looking to take it a step further this year, as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatl continue to dominate the game. McDavid is the face of this generation of hockey and if anyone is going to bring the Cup back north of the border many expect it to be him.
Is There a New York Team In the Mix?
The New York Rangers got themselves back in the playoff mix thanks to a seven-game winning streak. They currently sit as the first wild card in the Eastern Conference. This young Ranger team has plenty of potential but NY sportsbooks don’t seem to think it will happen this year.
The Islanders have started the season strong after missing the playoffs last year. Many key names from the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals two years ago still remain intact. The team currently holds the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but will likely be in a dogfight to hang on to it.
The Sabres started the season strong but an 8 game losing streak undid much of their success. The Sabres have failed to make the playoffs in each of the last 11 seasons. This and their outsider status are the reason NY sportsbooks are giving the Sabres remarkably long odds to hoist the Stanley Cup this time around.

Best Bets For Team’s With Longer Odds
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins are two good Stanley Cup bets. The Lightning have appeared in the Cup final in each of the past three seasons, winning two of them. Tampa Bay currently holds the third playoff spot in the Atlantic Division and its roster is filled with plenty of playoff experience.
After going through a rough patch early in the season the Pittsburgh Penguins have found their groove. The Penguins have struggled in the playoffs recently but Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin still have the capability of going on a deep playoff run. You can find this team further down the odds table, making them a great 2023 Stanley Cup bet.
