The Mets are coming off a four-game sweep over the lowly Pirates. Unfortunately, The Braves picked up a sweep of their own over the weekend, meaning the Mets lead in the NL East is still only a game.

Let’s break down New York’s series against the Brewers and give you odds from the best legal NY Sportsbook available:

Series Preview

Monday’s matchup vs the Brewers is a highly anticipated one for Mets fans. It’s set to be the return of Max Scherzer. Scherzer is going to be the #2 guy in the Mets playoff rotation, so getting him ready to go will be critical during the team’s stretch run. With only a one-game lead in the division, the team will need all the help they can get as they try to stave off the Braves down the stretch.

In Scherzer’s first start back he’ll go up against Brewers ace, Corbin Burnes. Burnes will be the toughest arm the Mets will face in this series.

Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker will each make starts for the Mets on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will both be auditioning for the Mets playoff rotation over the next couple of weeks.

The Brewers will need to win these games just as bad, if not more, than the Mets. Milwaukee is coming off a series in which they took 2 of 3 from the Yankees. They now sit two games back of a Wild Card spot so each game will be immensely important for them the rest of the way.

Mets Underdogs in Monday Night’s Contest

The series opens with the Mets listed as slight underdogs on Monday: Oddsmakers seem unsure about how long they expect Scherzer to last in this contest.

Here are the odds for Monday’s contest, powered by FanDuel.

New York Mets-104-1.5 (+164)o7 (+100)
Milwaukee Brewers-112+1.5 (-200)u7 (-122)

In Scherzer’s one rehab start this past Wednesday he went 3 ⅔ and only gave up one run while striking out 7. Scherzer had been pitching well in the big leagues prior to his fatigue issue. He was only sidelined for a couple of weeks. We’re likely to see the same Scherzer when he takes the mound tonight. He’ll bring the same fire he always brings, as he goes for win number 200 of his career.

Burnes pitched well in his last two starts but has faced some consistency issues since mid-August: It will be critical for the Mets to plate a couple of runners early and drive up Burnes’ pitch count. You don’t want to see him locked in, pitching into the seventh and eighth innings.

The Mets bats are coming off a solid series against the Pirates: Different guys were able to step up, but it was against the sub-par Pirates staff. Tonight’s matchup will be a test for the Mets lineup to see if they’re ready for what’s to come in the postseason.

It makes sense to lean with the Mets in the moneyline here. Each team will be going with a top-line quality starter, and the Mets are slight underdogs. The under is also a good bet, as it will be a challenge to score runs tonight in Milwaukee.

If the Mets are able to win tonight, they will clinch their first playoff berth since 2016.

The Rest of the Series

The Brewers haven’t named a starter for Tuesday’s matchup, but the Mets have. Carlos Carrasco has fared well in his last couple of outings. It may end up being a bullpen game for the Brewers. The Mets should come in as favorites on Tuesday night.

The Mets will turn to Taijuan Walker in the final game of this 3 game set. Walker has gone deep in his last two starts. Adrian Houser will be going for the Brewers. He got roughed up in a game in Queens back in June. It’s going to be another winnable game on Wednesday afternoon for the Mets.
