March Madness Odds Favorites
Following last year’s March Madness tournament win by Kansas, the opening college basketball odds favored Duke (+1100), followed by the Jayhawks (+1250), and last year’s runner-up North Carolina (+1300). Now that most teams near the winter breaks of their season, the odds boards have adjusted to some of the early season performances.
Favorite: Houston Cougars (+700)
Following their run to the Elite Eight in last year’s March Madness tournament, Houston opened the season with +1600 odds to win this year’s NCAAB championship. The Cougars started the season 11-1, including an impressive road win in Oregon. Houston’s never won the national title despite six runs to the Final Four (including in 2021) and two championship game appearances. That said, this year’s team seems poised to change that.
Favorite: Connecticut Huskies (+1200)
UConn saw long NCAAB national championship odds to start the season (+10000), but moved to near the top of most odds boards in short order. The Huskies have hustled to an 12-0 start this season, winning each game by double digits. They’ve matchup up against five high-major teams and won those by an average of 18 points-per-game. UConn has yet to trail in the second half of games this season and looks like a legitimate national title contender.
Sleeper and Longshot to Consider
Sleeper: Alabama Crimson Tide (+3000)
Normally considered a football school, the University of Alabama’s basketball team continues to make noise through the first month of the season. The Crimson Tide scored arguably the most impressive win of the year thus far, beating top-ranked Houston on the road. Alabama regularly finds different ways to win and relies on solid depth which will help in a March Madness run.
Longshot: University of Miami (+11000)
Another football school, the Miami Hurricanes jumped out to a 11-1 start this season. The program found itself ranked for the first time since 2017-18, despite making a run to the Elite Eight last season. Miami’s veteran-laden team sports experience and moxie, two characteristics that could make for a Cinderella run in March.
The New York Longshot
Longshot: Syracuse (+30000)
The Syracuse Orangemen opened with +10000 odds at DraftKings and started the season slowly, going just 3-4 through their first seven games. Since then, however, the team has righted the ship to an extent, winning five in a row. Heading into the semester break, Syracuse remains a significant longshot on the DraftKings March Madness odds board. The Orangemen see +30000 odds.
