A Way Too Early Look At the 2023-2024 NCAAF Championship Odds

The 2022-2023 college football season has concluded. The Georgia Bulldogs won their 4th National Championship in a drubbing over TCU. Georgia became the first back-to-back champions since Alabama won it all in 2011 and 2012. 

This college football season was filled with upsets. TCU shockingly reached the National Championship after coming into the season with +20000 odds to win it all. Alabama was a notable omission from the college football playoff for the first time in three years.

We’ll now have seven and a half months to reflect on the season and look forward to the next one. Let’s take a look at what’s to come next year and give the betting odds for who will be crowned champion for the 2023-2024 season.

Georgia is the favorite to win their third straight national title next season. The Bulldogs’ off-season agenda will be to find a quarterback to replace Stetson Bennett IV, who declared for the 2023 NFL draft. 

Carson Beck was the backup to Bennett this past season and will be the favorite to win the starting job next year. Georgia could also look to acquire talent in the transfer portal.

This season Georgia did a terrific job building a defense after losing much of it to the draft. They’ll have to do the same next year, as Kirby Smart’s team is prepared to lose at least three key defenders to the draft.

Alabama has the second-best odds to win the National Championship next season. The Crimson Tide had a disappointing 11-2 season but will be looking to bounce back next year. They’ll have to fill the holes of Bryce Young and Will Anderson. Both are top talents that will be heading to the NFL. 

As of right now, Jalen Milroe is Alabama’s starting quarterback next season. Nick Saban could end up looking to the transfer portal to fill this role if he doesn’t like what he sees from Milroe. On the defensive side of the ball, look for Dallas Turner to serve as the Tide’s “game wrecker’ next season.

The Big 10 got two team’s into the CFP this year. They were Michigan and Ohio State and they both suffered heartbreaking semi-final losses. Michigan will be returning much of its team. JJ McCarthy will be a junior next season and is poised for a breakout season. McCarthy has +3000 odds to win the Heisman Trophy. 

Ohio State is a team that’s always going to be in the mix. Quarterback CJ Stroud will be declaring for the draft, which will force Ryan Day to make a big decision this off-season. Whoever ends up taking the reigns under center will still have star wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. to throw to.

The quarterback battle of the off-season will be in Austin, Texas. Arch Manning, nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, will be a freshman at UT next fall. Winning the starting job will be no easy task for the young Manning, as he’ll have to beat out Quinn Ewers. Ewers played well at Texas this year. All eyes are going to be on Austin this summer.

Texas is tied for the 11th-best odds to win the 2024 National Championship. It’s been a while since the Longhorns were relevant late in the year, but the program is on its way up.

USC has the 5th best odds to win the title game. The Trojans will be returning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams. USC was a Pac-12 championship win away from reaching the playoff this year. They’ll be looking to be a top 4 team next year for the first time since the field expanded to four.

Clemson will be trying to get back in the mix next season. They went 11-3 this year and capped off their season with an Orange Bowl loss to Tennessee. The Tigers have failed to put together an elite offense or defense in the last couple of years. Dabo Swinney’s squad has the 6th best odds to win the National Championship next season.

There are a lot of familiar teams at the top of the 2024 National Championship odds table. Of the top eight teams, six of them have won a National Title in the past 10 years. 

A notable omission from the top eight is the runners-up from this past season. TCU was college football’s cinderella this year until it all came apart in the title game. The Horned Frogs now have the 17th-best odds to win it all next season, at +6000.

If you’re looking for a New York team to wager on, you’ll have to look further down the table. Syracuse has +25000 odds to be crowned champions next season. They surprised a lot of people this year after starting the season 6-0 and rising to #14 in the rankings. The Orange then lost six of their last seven to finish the year 7-6.

Syracuse’s notable out-of-conference game next year will be at Purdue on September 16th. 

With Georgia set to have a major target on their back, you may want to look elsewhere when wagering on a team to win the National Title. Expect Alabama to come out of the gates next year with plenty of energy. They’ve got good value at +500. Don’t be surprised if USC makes some noise in the Pac-12 next year, snapping the conference’s streak without a playoff team.
